As children growing up on the Marsh, few places conjoured up as much macabre fascination as the crpyt of St.Leonard's Church in Hythe. The crypt contains the bones and skulls of some 4,000 unknown people. Nobody is absolutely certain where they came from. We personally believed that the graveyard was filled up and needed to be emptied ready to begin new burials. This possibility filled us with motal terror and we considered this particular churchyard and the surrounding area a place to be definitely avoided at night, for fear of the many unsettled spooks and spectres we imagined roaming the hill. Inspiration indeed!
