As young children, the sluices held a special fascination for us as terrifying places of murky depths and infinite darkness. We also avoided swimming anywhere near them for fear of being sucked in through the hellish gates! I also scared my brother Bill on a couple of occasions by threatening to jump into Dymchurch sluice when I couldn't get my own way!! He still reminds me of this from time to time! - Jayl
